Define Your Reality - Day 14
The Voice of God
by Jared Travis
Do you know the voices of your grandparents, a child-hood BFF, a TV icon such as Mr. Rogers, or a singer such as Louis Armstrong? There are countless voices that you have heard in your lifetime. When we hear these voices, they provide various reactions, whether it be comfort, laughter, or relevant to our day–fear.
In these days of fear and difficulty and scenes of panic, we need to hear a voice. Those voices you are familiar with do give comfort and are very encouraging. Consider, though, that the sounds from the media or from our past do not have the power to overcome all things. Rather, we need to hear from someone greater, someone everlasting. Every child of God would quickly proclaim that the voice of God is exactly like that – full of greatness and life.
When I ponder God’s voice and the words and message He has given, my ears and eyes often turn to the longest chapter of the Bible, Psalm 119. For some, Psalm 119 is a lengthy read. However, if we settle in a comfy chair for a few minutes, adjust a pillow or two, sip a cup of favorite tea, we can read the words of the author that pour the beautiful voice of God in our thirsty ears.
“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (vs. 18)
“May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant” (vs. 76)
“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth” (vs. 102)
“Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight” (vs. 143)
“Let me live that I may praise you, and may your laws sustain me” (vs. 175)
In these examples, we see God speaking to the author. What does God say? He says that His law is full of wonder. God promises His unfailing love that gives comfort. The Word of God tastes sweet and delicious, more than the finest honey. We can relate to the author that when trouble comes our way, our solace – our delight – is God’s utterances that we yearn to obey. And, we desire to live this life in praise to God because His law – that being His words spoken by His everlasting voice – is what sustains you and me.
Reading through Psalm 119, each and every couplet declares the marvelous truths of God, and each declaration is coupled with a reference to what God has already spoken in the Bible.
Indeed, God has already spoken to our current world that suffers darkness and fear. Open your eyes and your ears to God, rejoice in His love, taste that God is good, delight in His commands, and praise Him because He sustains. The voice of God is powerful – read on!
