Define Your Reality - Day 4
Relentless Prayers for an Ever-Listening God
by Jared Travis
A friend once sat in our living room for a Bible study. During our weekly discussions, he listened carefully, asked questions, and stared at the ceiling in thought. One day, I asked him if he wanted anything to do with God. He waved me away. “No. I can’t. I want to see God first.” This friend lacked any faith, or desire, in God.
For the child of God, our faith may be weak at times. We want to see God so we can gripe and grouse. But, when we don’t get that face to face meeting, we wonder if God cares or listens. After all, a listening ear is something we all need, especially during moments of angst, frustration, and pain. David in Psalm 55 calls to God at the very beginning of this prayer, saying “Listen to my prayer, O God.” In faith, he knows God is attuned. David has experienced an injury that only God’s salvation can be the balm for the wound.
The Lord’s attention and thus salvation is what David is seeking. In fact, David calls to God morning, noon, and evening. He calls in distress as he is being battered from the enemy’s assaults. David is at war; his prayer is relentless. His prayer matches, no, outpaces the attacks! And he declares victory because God has ransomed him unharmed.
The prayer life of a child of God is to be relentless and fervent. We can’t always avoid hard times in life. There will be sickness; there will be car wrecks; there will be empty pantries; there will be funerals. But, can we cast these cares on the Lord? Can we take the angst, frustration, and pain and give it to God? The answer is obviously ‘yes.’ And it is a firm, immovable ‘yes’ because God is attuned to His children.
When we consider that God is constantly listening, should we not then be in prayer with a relentless fervor? David declares that God will sustain us and never let His children fall. This very action of God means He does not go on vacation or needs a break. God, our Rock, is forever and always immovable.
Let our prayers be relentless and full of fervor. The One who listens is going only closer to you.
