Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. -Hebrews 12:1
As we grow stronger and take steps to go deeper in our relationship with God, we must intentionally look into the reality of His Word. We must take time to sift through our hearts, feelings, and lives in light of the truth that God has given us. There is power in the Word of God. Many believers would agree with this statement, but few take it serious enough to daily set their eyes on His Word.
Yesterday, in our message, Brandon defined the world as “humanity organized into rebellion against God.” The world lies in darkness and absolute slavery to sin. The world conspires against our souls, keeping our lives superficial. The world wants nothing more than to keep us in superficial things. The deeper we go, the more clearly we see that the world will never truly satisfy our hearts. John Ortberg tells us that, “There is a depth to your soul that is beyond words. Our problem is that this world does not teach us to pay attention to what matters.”
The writer of Hebrews knew this to be true. In Hebrews 11, he lays out the foundation of our great need for faith. To take God at His Word. Throughout Scripture God shows us that in and of ourselves we will never find the hope and fulfillment that we so desperately crave. Only God, through the death, burial, and resurrection of His Son could do that. The writer of Hebrews reminds us of all those believers that have come before us, and how it was their faith in God that made the difference.
They chose to take God at His Word believing that He was more than enough to save them. Therefore, because we have seen all of these mighty men and women of faith come before us, we too must step out in faith and go deeper in our relationship with God.
Richard Foster says that superficiality is the curse of our age. The writer of Hebrews calls for us to take an in-depth look at our heart and lives. He tells us to, “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and to run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Stop making excuses and get rid of the junk in your life that is keeping you from truly living to the glory of God. Take seriously what His Word is telling you and live it out.
When we allow our values to match the current culture of the world around us, we are no longer following the Bible, we are following the lost. We must set our eyes on the Word of God so that we can walk faithfully in the will of God.
Are you ready for more? Are to ready to experience all that God has in store for you? Are you willing to get rid of the things in your life that are keeping you from experiencing the true glory of God in your life? Ask God to open your eyes to the things that are keeping you from being all that He created you to be. Then ask Him to help you remove them. I promise He will.
